I have said before and will say again, I often liken my life to a sit-com. Last night was no different.
After a drive in "HOT CAR", aka the green 1993 Camry with no working A/C (but, THANK GOD! the power windows still work!), I was a bit wiped out. Chris offered to make mac n cheese for the girls and I agreed readily. Simple enough, I think.
However, I did not consider the following set of facts:
1) Chris really is a "niche" cook - i.e., he does meat VERY well (and possibly should keep to that genre?)
2) Chris has NEVER (EVER) made mac n cheese (yes, I too, thought this statistically unlikely, but I digress)
3) Chris has rarely in his adult life ever made pasta (again, who would have thought?)
4) Chris typically doesn't ask questions until he realizes that something has gone terribly, horribly wrong

Ok, so that is what we are dealing with and in my heat-induced stupor, I overlooked these crucial details. The first question he asks me is a bit curious ("So, how do you make it orange?"). The mac n cheese is organic, therefore does not contain the standard "orange" cheese powder, but just a white, natural cheddar. I typically add a few drops of food color to make it orange so the girls will eat it because, "MOM! It's supposed to be orange!!!" Chris, realized that I must do something, so he asks - good on him. I tell him, 2 drops of the red food color. Simple enough, I think. However, the bottle of food color is shelved next to the food color concentrate, so he chooses the latter (which is used in baking for cookies and icing and such). Two drops of the concentrate completely bipasses anything that would resemble orange and goes straight to the oh-so-natural-looking hot pink. Oh, yes! The mac n cheese turned more pink than I thought possible. The irony is that the kids LOVED it! They were even bragging about their "pink bunny" mac n cheese to the kids in their ballet camp this morning.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade, right? In this case, if your husband uses the wrong food color and turns the mac n cheese pink, GO WITH IT! It may turn out to be a hit!
